Do you like it needlessly complex and overengineered, aka. Mercedes 300E 4Matic?
Do you like it tried and tested in rallying, aka. Audi 100 2.8 Quattro?
Or do you like dat Straight six life, aka BMW 525ix?

The myth especially in touring form.

Apart from the 4matic system not bothering to work because the steering wheel sensor has failed, and a bunch of obnoxiousness recently with the fuel injection system, my dad’s one is still poking along with over 290,000 miles. It would be lots of expense for the sensor (and possible others), and presumably the clutch packs soon after being made to work constantly again, but aside from that I like the car. One can always reset the system if it’s needed for a short while until errors - which we’ve done before.

BMWs should be RWD, so that one is out. The Mercedes is a w124, so it can’t possibly be unreliable and is thus disqualified. That leaves the Audi.

Turbocharged

Love it, also its not unreliable. Best audi Ive owned so far, havent seen an CEL yet. Also its the better 2.2 5cylinder turbo with a 5 speed in the tunnel.

Out of the 3 options presented I will go with the Audi.

Nice. Try and find one that hasn’t been modified or beaten to hell tho.

Not needlessly over-engineered enough. The merc could have easily been the worlds first AWD dual clutch hybrid diesel. So much potential (for extraordinarily devestating repair costs) missed. Sigh...

You probably haven’t seen a CEL because the bulb is burned out... :P
Just kidding. The only time I got a CEL on my 525i was when the gas cap wasn’t on correctly.

Yeah, you would need to go to Germany to find a proper unmolested one. There’s one for sale in Norway right now, but photos were taken at night. Probably for a reason..

I am in Germany. Some clean ones pop up from time to time. But currently there are only two modded ones for sale.

Who cares if the 4Matic system works or not? This is why you have a Frankenburban or other diesel GM 4x4 truck/BOF SUV.

...with a bunch of cracked webs in the block, so Nevermind That, Then. OTOH, the Astro is AWD and towish.

BAHAHA, at 270k that’s almost a posibility! But I check for codes at least once a month. Overall, the germans, in the 90s these cars were better made than the shit that is put out today (which, lets face it, is done for high turnover rates less for making things last +200k miles)

This and this looks quite good?
I’m no expert in German though, so I might have overseen something..

I agree with you. My 525i went 231K miles on the original clutch (I let a friend drive it and he downshifted from 5th to 1st - d’oh!). Other than the keylock for the steering column and a window regulator that didn’t get exercised much, everything else has been regular maintenance and normal wear items (fuel pumps, suspension, brakes, etc.) I expect this car to go for decades more at this rate.

Holy whoa. Haven’t seen them. Damn that is tempting.
But this must be the cleanest one in existence.

But it’s still a fucking VECTRA!
![]() 11/11/2015 at 13:36 |

The best Vectra.

The Astro is probably your best bet. Make plans to steal and lift it because awesome.

Vectra-A is the best Vectra. But the 4x4 version is still horrible. Stay away from those.

Certain People asked how much the Lincoln weighed when it looked like we might need to swap tow vehicles. Me: “Uh, no. It’s about 6500lb with the trailer. Your Astro
can’t tow it.
” Him: “That’s... stupid”. Me: “I think you mispronounced ‘awesome’”. Him: “No, I think you mispronounced ‘stupid’”.

Don’t worry, I’ll never buy one. I’ll never buy any of the other cars above either.

I think there was an option for a Class III hitch on the Astro/Safari...

I’ll take the 124. But without 4matic and with a V8.
